What is B Corp Certification? B Corporation Explained for Furniture Shoppers

B Corp certification, short for Certified B Corporation, is a third-party company-level certification administered by the nonprofit B Lab (founded 2006; first B Corps certified in 2007) that scores a business across five impact areas — Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers — and requires a minimum score of 80 out of 200 to certify. There are around 8,500 Certified B Corporations worldwide as of 2024–2025. Brands earn the certificate by completing the B Impact Assessment, providing supporting documentation, undergoing verification interviews and document review with B Lab analysts, and amending their legal governing documents to embed stakeholder accountability. B Corp matters in furniture for a specific reason. FSC tells you the wood was responsibly sourced. GREENGUARD tells you the finished product passes an emissions test. Neither tells you what the company behind the product is actually like to work for, how it treats the community where its factory is located, or whether the founder has any legal obligation to consider stakeholders other than shareholders. B Corp does. A brand without B Corp can still be ethical — many are — but the absence of a third-party company-level audit means a buyer is taking the brand's word for it. B Corp is the audited version of that promise.

The greenwashing this certificate addresses is brand-storytelling overreach: a marketing page that talks about "values" and "purpose" without any independent verification. B Corp is the only widely recognized US/UK certification that puts a numerical score on a company's overall practice.

What B Corp actually measures

The B Impact Assessment is a 200-point questionnaire covering five impact areas. Each area has multiple sub-categories with their own weighted questions. A brand has to score at least 80 points across all five to certify, but the score is one number — strength in one area can compensate for relative weakness in another, up to a point. The 80-point bar is calibrated against tens of thousands of completed assessments; the median for-profit company that completes the assessment scores around 50.

The five impact areas:

  • Governance — mission, ethics, transparency, and the legal accountability structures the brand has put in place. Certified B Corps amend their articles of incorporation or equivalent to require directors to consider workers, community, environment, and customers — not only shareholders.
  • Workers — wages, benefits, training, health and safety, worker engagement, ownership structures. The Workers area is where B Corp's Labor weight is strongest.
  • Community — diversity, equity, civic engagement, supplier practices, local economic impact, charitable giving.
  • Environment — energy use, water, waste, emissions, supplier environmental practice, and any product-level environmental design.
  • Customers — the structural impact of the company's product on its customer base, including data privacy, product safety, and access for underserved populations.

Every five-point sub-section is independently scorable. The total is the sum.

What B Corp does not measure. B Corp scores the company, not the individual product. A B Corp brand can sell a product made from uncertified wood, with no finish-chemistry disclosure, and that product earns no B Corp benefit at the product level beyond the implication that the company's practice is audited. For product-level signals, look at FSC (wood), GREENGUARD Gold (emissions), and OEKO-TEX (textiles).

How verification works

B Lab, the nonprofit administrator, is headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, with regional offices including B Lab UK, B Lab Europe, and B Lab Australia/New Zealand. The certification process has four steps:

  1. B Impact Assessment. The brand completes the questionnaire — typically takes several months for a mid-sized business.
  2. Score validation. A B Lab analyst reviews documentation, asks follow-up questions, and may request additional evidence. The disclosure questionnaire flags any "sensitive industries" or material risks.
  3. Verification interview. B Lab interviews company leadership and reviews supporting documents.
  4. Legal requirement. The brand amends its legal governing documents to embed stakeholder accountability (the specific mechanism depends on jurisdiction — in the US it's typically a Benefit Corporation conversion, in the UK it's a change to the Articles of Association).

Recertification happens every three years. B Lab maintains a public directory at bcorporation.net where any buyer can look up a certified brand, see the impact score, see the certification date, and see when the brand is due for recertification.

  • Anglepoise — UK lighting brand. B Corp since the early 2020s. The Anglepoise Original 1227 lamp has been in continuous production since 1935 and the brand holds its B Corp on the strength of its UK manufacturing, lifetime guarantee program, and Workers practice.
  • Case Furniture — British design house behind Matthew Hilton's reissues and contemporary work. B Corp certified.
  • Mater — Copenhagen design studio behind the patented Matek composite material (coffee shell, mango skin, used fishing nets, end-of-life industrial waste pressed into load-bearing wood-replacement components). B Corp since the early years of the European program.
  • Tala — British LED lighting brand. B Corp since 2017.
  • Tiptoe — French modular furniture system. B Corp since 2021. Manufacturing partly through French ESAT sheltered workshops.
  • Humanscale — US office furniture. B Corp with Climate Positive status under the Living Product Challenge framework.

B Corp via corporate parent:

  • The Rosendahl Design Group — corporate parent of Kähler, Holmegaard, Lyngby Porcelæn, and the Rosendahl own-label — holds B Corp at the group level. Buyers shopping any of those four brands are buying from a B Corp parent.

Among the brands we carry, B Corp is best represented in lighting and tableware. The reason is partly structural: B Corp scoring rewards brands that publish wages and Workers practice, and small-batch British and Danish design houses tend to be on the front end of that disclosure curve.

How to verify a brand's B Corp claim yourself

Go to bcorporation.net and use the company directory search. The public profile shows the overall impact score, the certification date, the next recertification date, and the breakdown across the five impact areas. If a brand markets itself as B Corp but does not appear in the directory, the claim is not verifiable. A lapsed certification will show as recertification-pending or expired.

Where B Corp sits in the Comosum Sustainability Meter

That said, a B Corp brand is not a guaranteed pass. The meter scores the product, and a B Corp brand with poor Material disclosure on a specific SKU will still fail the Material threshold. The reverse is also true: a non-B-Corp brand with strong scores across the other dimensions can clear the threshold.

Frequently asked questions

What does B Corp certification cost a brand to obtain?

Annual B Corp certification fees scale with company revenue. For a small brand (under $250K annual revenue) the fee is in the low four figures. For a $50M revenue brand it runs into five figures annually. The B Impact Assessment itself is free to complete; the verification process and ongoing certification are what the fees pay for.

How often is B Corp certification renewed?

Every three years. The brand must re-complete the B Impact Assessment, score at least 80 again, and pass verification. Many brands score higher at recertification than at initial certification as their practice deepens.

Is B Corp better than ISO 14001 or other company-level certifications?

They measure different things. B Corp covers five impact areas — Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, Customers — and is the broadest company-level certification widely available. ISO 14001 covers environmental management systems specifically and is narrower but more deeply audited on that one dimension. Both are credible; B Corp gives a buyer a wider read on a company's practice.

Do all sustainable furniture brands carry B Corp?

No. B Corp is administratively heavy for small brands without dedicated sustainability staff, and some excellent sustainable brands choose to certify against narrower standards (FSC, ISO 14001, SFC ratings) rather than commit to the B Corp recertification cycle. The absence of B Corp does not mean the brand is not sustainable — it means the third-party company-level audit has not been done.

What happens if a B Corp brand loses certification?

The brand can no longer use the B Corp mark. Loss can happen if the brand scores below 80 at recertification, fails the verification process, undergoes a material change in ownership without re-verification, or fails to maintain its legal commitment to stakeholder governance. Lapses appear in the public B Corp directory.

Can a B Corp brand still be a publicly traded company?

Yes. Several B Corps are publicly traded, including Unilever's Ben & Jerry's, Allbirds, and Warby Parker. The legal requirement to consider stakeholders applies regardless of ownership structure — the mechanism is different for public companies (a specific stakeholder-rights provision rather than a Benefit Corporation conversion) but the substantive obligation is the same.
